Lipid peroxidation, advanced glycation end products and antioxidant status in patients on dialysis

چکیده
Oxidative stress increases the risk of cardiovascular disease in patients on chronic dialysis. In this study, we examined markers of oxidative stress and antioxidant status in haemodialysis (HD) patients in order to find out their relationship to the dialysis treatment. Study included 25 patients on long-term haemodialysis (HD) and 30 control subjects. Levels of malonyldialdehyde+4hydroxyalkenes (MDA+4-HNE), advanced glycation end products (AGEs) and superoxide dismutase (Cu/ZnSOD) were assayed in plasma or serum. Mean plasma level of MDA+4-HNE was 2-fold higher and AGEs 4fold higher in HD patients, comparing to control subjects. Also Cu/ZnSOD were significantly elevated in dialysis patients. Positive correlation between AGEs as well as Cu/ZnSOD concentration and duration of HD treatment (r=0,68, p<0,007; r=0,53, p<0,006) was found. Significantly increased oxidative stress may accelerate atherosclerotic changes and cardiovascular complications in haemodialysis patients but seems to be, at least in part, counteracted by enhanced antioxidant capacity.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus represents a major public health challenge, due to the continuously growing prevalence and the complexity of the diabetic complications. Hyperglycemia seems to be the main mechanism for the disease progression. During erythrocyte’s long life span, erythrocyte membranes are affected by the chronic exposure to glucose, which triggers several biochemical modifications that...

Background and purpose: Hyperglycemia contributes to type 2 diabetes and diabetes vascular complications by reduction of the activity of glyoxalase-I (GLO-I) and elevation of glycation, oxidative stress, and inflammatory markers. Linalool is reported to have beneficial effects on glucose metabolism in animal models of diabetes, so, this study aimed at investigating the effect of linalool on the...
متن کامل[Oxidative stress and protein glycation in diabetes mellitus].
Metabolic alterations of diabetes mellitus are not only informative biological signs, but also factors of degenerative complications. Thus, hyperglycaemia increases non enzymatic glycation, characterized by the binding of simple oses (glucose) or by-products to amino groups of proteins. This reaction leads to the formation of complex compounds, advanced glycation end products (AGEs), which alte...
متن کاملDevelopment of Nonalcoholic Hepatopathy: Contributions of Oxidative Stress and Advanced Glycation End Products
Advanced glycation end products (AGEs) are generated spontaneously in cells; however, under conditions of hyperglycemia and lipid peroxidation, their levels are higher than usual, which contribute to the development of diseases such as the nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). NAFLD is associated with oxidative stress (OS), which is linked to the transition of steatosis to steatohepatitis d...
